We yesterday visited the fine sawing & turning works of Clarke, Cole & Co. on the West side of the Rock River, which we found was worthy of more than a passing notice. We were shown over the establishment by Mr Clarke, the senior partner, & found that they had machinery sufficient to turn off quite an amount of work, such as bedsteads, chairs, wagon hubs, broom handles, in fact everything in the turning line. We were shown a saw which Mr Clarke brought with him from New England that cut a few days ago 500 feet of lumber in five hours. The steam engine is one of Goodnow's horizontal Badger state make, got up at Milwaukee, & is a beautiful piece of mechanism, twenty horse power, & works to admiration. It is so constructed that it burns saw dust & all refuse of the manufactory; & the engineer told us that it did not consume a cord of wood in a week. In the 2nd story of the bldg we found a large number of handsome bedspreads of the most approved patterns, & chairs in any quantity in the process of finishing, preparatory to painting, which is done in the 3rd story. |

The lumber kiln recently erected by Clarke, Cole & Co was discovered to be on fire Tues night. Every exertion by our citizens was made to suppress it but by 11:00 it was burned to the ground. The loss of $200 was not extensive, but it will retard their business somewhat, as the lumber which was drying in the kiln was much wanted for immediate use. It made a large blaze & illuminated most of the village. |

It commenced raining on Sunday forenoon at 11:00 & continued to 4::00 or 5:00. The storm commenced in all its fury, deluging streets, alleys, cellars & gardens without stint or measure. The Rock River was so swollen that it overflowed its banks in many places, & hundreds of acres are covered with water. Milling operations of all kinds are suspended & at one time feared the dam would be carried away. Several bridges leading to Jeff have been carried away. (Longer article). |

The Rock River is still increasing its dimensions & has been growing larger for the last 3 or 4 days, so much so that those living on the other side of the Crawfish Bridge have to be boated across. All the marshes & low lands lying in the vicinity of the 2 rivers, amounting to thousands of acres, present to the view a sheet of water such as never has been seen before by anyone now residing in Jeff. |
