Died: Captain Robert Masters, 1/23/1867, 81, at his residence 1 mile south of Jeff. He was a native of NY, & before coming west was for many years a captain upon the lakes, in fact, he was on the lakes from boyhood until about 50 years of age. Thirty years ago last Christmas the deceased in company with Capt. Thayer, of Aztalan, came to the present site of Jeff, & Capt. Masters located the claim one mile below this village, which has since that time been his residence; that day they stopped on the high hill between this village & Aztalan & gave it the name it bears to this day, 'Christmas Hill'. The deceased raised a large family, consisting of 11 children, 4 of whom are now in Calif, one in the US Army, & 3 in this state, of whom Hon. E. D. Masters, of Jeff, & Emandus, of Oakland, are two. Capt. Masters was probably the oldest Free Mason in the state, having been a just & upright member of the order for nearly 60 years. He was buried with Masonic honors by his brethren of the Jeff Lodge. In !842 & 1843 the deceased was a member of the territorial legislature, has been Register of Deeds, & since that time has filled many offices of trust & honor in the county. The deceased had endured all the privations of a sailors life & contended with the disadvantages of a pioneer's life. He was firm & decided in his manner, a man of great endurance, strong mental powers, the will of a Grant, & a kind heart that ever listened to the suffering & trials of the weak & poor. He was left a widower in January, 1846, & now leaves a wife & 8 children to mourn his loss as a husband & father & the community to revere his memory as an old & respected citizen. |

We notice that those at work on the woolen factory have been driving a lot of spiles in the river from the factory to the bridge. The intention, we believe, is to fill the space between the spiles & the bank with dirt in order to give them more lee way in getting to the factory. |
