In 1851 Rev Seth Barnes, of the Universalistic denomination, settled here, and in 1853, erected the first church. It was a brick structure, quite small. It was sold to the Roman Catholics in 1858 & the beautiful church now owned by the Universalistic Society built the coming season. |

In 1850 Barr & Bros built the store now occupied by McMahon Bros. This was also the first brick store in this place. |

In the summer of 1842, Enoch Darling & Kimball Bros completed the dam across the Rock River, together with the sawmill at the East end of it. During that summer, also the first company of German immigrants, consisting of several families, arrived. (excerpt from the Student Experiment). |

Jeff has: 3,000 people, 8 dry goods & grocery store, 4 hardware & tin stores, 2 drug stores, 1 jewelry store, 1 National Bank, 2 tobacco & cigar manufactories, 7 boot & shoe stores, 2 cabinet rooms, 3 meat markets, 3 harness shops, 1 flour & feed store, 1 photographic gallery, 3 millinery shops, 3 merchant tailors, 1 bakery, 1 book bindery, 5 hotels, 5 blacksmith shops, 3 wagon shops, 6 cooper shops, 3 brick yards, 1 grist mill, 1 foundry & machine shop, 1 woolen factory, 1 foundry, 3 grain elevators, 3 brewerys, 1 chair & bedstead factory with sawmill & lumber yard connected, 1 pump factory, 3 lumber yards, 1 paint shop, 6 churches, 1 convent, 6 schools, 1 reading room, 1 masonic lodge, 4 physicians, 1 dentist, 6 attorneys & two newspapers. |

During this year (1837), Enoch Darling built a story and a half house near where the J House now stands. Abut 2 years afterward he made some additions. In 1844 he put up a large 2 1/2 story bldg and gave it the name of the "Jefferson House". While this was being built, the former bldg caught fire & was partly consumed. These were the first frame buildings in the place & must have presented a fine appearance. (Reprinted from the Student Experiment). |
