1872-01-03     A sad case of inhuman treatment: About 3:00 on Thurs. morning last Seriff Schwellenbach was called upon to go to the residence of August Trafholz, a German residing about three miles from Jeff, for the purpose of arresting Trafholtz, who it was claimed had been pounding & kicking his wife. When the sheriff arrived at the house he found the door locked & it was several minutes before he could gain an entrance. Trafholtz was sitting by the fire without any light, & it was found that he had beat & kicked his wife in a fearful manner, she was bleeding badly & the floor was covered with blood. She was so badly injured that her life was despaired of. Trafholz had endeavored to cut his own throat with a pocket Knife, which proved to be quite dull. After cutting a small gash in his throat, his courage failed him & he concluded to give it up as a bad job. He was arrested & conveyed to jail. His examination was postponed until the present week, as it was expected his wife must surely die from the wounds she had received. At the present time she is still alive. Trafholz had been in town the previous day & claims that he had drank too much beer, but those present claim that he did not show any appearance of having been under the influence of liquor. It is a sad case of inhuman treatment, the contemplation of which makes the blood run cold. Let the law take its course.

1872-01-17     11 Fire: A barn in the rear of the old Guttenberg bldg was in flames. Surrounding it were several barns & a row of wooden bldgs on Main St, all huddled together. Before the fire engine could get at work, the bldg was one solid mass of flames. Meyers barn, within about 18" of the burning bldg, caught in many places. Soon water squirted. The hook & ladder boys tore down a wooden shed which connected the main part of the Guttenberg with the burning barn. In a half to three quarters of an hour, the flames were extinguished with very little damage except for the original barn. Mrs Dechend family (formerly Mrs Guttenberg) were in bed. Praises to the Fire Depts. The block was all wooden bldgs except 2 were brick.

The sheriff's people were up until 1:00 in the morning, & all was safe at the time they retired. Stoft was in jail for robbery, & the other two, who are Norwegians, were in jail for perjury, we believe. Up to the present time they have evaded the officers.
